Three hours east of Antananarivo, the rainforest of Andasibe-Mantadia is home to the indri, the largest lemur alive today. Families call to each other every morning, and the sound carries for kilometres through the trees.
Best time of day
Arrive at the park entrance early. Indri are most vocal in the first hours after sunrise, and local guides know which family groups are nearby.
More than lemurs
- Parson’s chameleon and the tiny leaf chameleons
- Diademed sifakas in Mantadia
- Leaf-tailed geckos that are almost impossible to spot without a guide
- Endemic birds such as the blue coua
Do the night walk
After dark, guides walk the road at the edge of the reserve with torches. You can expect sleeping chameleons, frogs and, with luck, mouse lemurs, some of the smallest primates in the world.
Our Andasibe Lemur Forest Escape includes both the morning walk and a night walk.
