Avenue of the Baobabs: a short photography guide

The Avenue of the Baobabs, about 45 minutes from Morondava, is the most photographed place in Madagascar. A little planning makes the difference between a crowded snapshot and the picture you came for.

Sunset or sunrise?

Sunset is the classic, with warm light on the trunks and the sun dropping behind the trees. Sunrise is much quieter, and the soft light from the east works beautifully on the reflections in the ponds during the wet months.

Where to stand

  • Walk to the far end of the avenue to frame the trees in a line
  • Use the small ponds on the east side for reflections
  • Stay after sunset for the blue hour and the first stars

Don’t miss

Ask your driver to stop at the “Baobabs in Love”, two trees that grew around each other, and at the sacred baobab, where local people leave offerings.
